Challenge
I was asked by the photographer Shawn Rowe to collaborate on an art book for his MFA thesis. The book covers his photo series V. The portrait series explores masculinity and how it inhabits notes of brutality and fragility characterized through images of the body, the built environment, and the natural landscape. He wanted to go beyond the traditional hardcover book and make something that was an art object in itself.

Solution
I was inspired by how the series uses ambiguity and metaphor. I designed an experience that would give more context as you engaged with it more. To do this I designed phased box packaging that had a magnetic enclosure. When a person looks around and unfolds the packaging, they start to see the information that gives background to what the book is about.
